The two tasks that decide the paper
Cross-text multiple matching asks you to compare opinions across four separate texts: who agrees with whom, and about what exactly. It is a reasoning task wearing a reading task’s clothes, and it cannot be solved by finding a matching word — the four writers rarely use the same vocabulary for the same position.
The gapped text at C1 removes whole paragraphs, not single sentences. That changes the skill: you are reconstructing the architecture of an argument, using reference words, topic progression and the logic of what must have come before. Candidates who can read fluently at C1 still lose marks here if they have never practised reading structurally.
