How the reading paper is built

The paper runs as a set of tasks rather than one long text, and g.a.s.t. states that the working time and the number of tasks can vary between test forms while every candidate takes an equally long test. Some tasks are pilot items that do not count towards your result, and you will not be told which. Marking is automatic on a points scale, with TDN 4 sitting in a published band of it.

g.a.s.t. does not publish per-text word counts or a fixed question-format specification, and it does not describe the digital test as computer-adaptive. Any page that gives you a per-task item breakdown, or tells you the test adapts to your answers, has gone beyond what the awarding body has said. This page prints the published task count, duration and item count with their source and stops there.

Preparing for the text types, not the trick

Because reading comes first and is scored on the same scale as the other three sections, a weak reading result costs you the overall TDN you need even if your speaking is strong. The efficient preparation is volume in the right register: read German academic and semi-academic prose most days, at a level you can actually hold, and answer questions on it so that comprehension is measured rather than assumed.

Honest scope

TestDaF is four sections and admission usually depends on all of them. LingoRead trains the reading one. It does not prepare Hören, Schriftlicher Ausdruck or Mündlicher Ausdruck, and it does not predict a TDN.
