This exam is mid-change

HSK is mid-reform and the reform is unresolved. The nine-level GF0025-2021 standard governs, and HSK 7–9 is live: 98 questions across five skills including translation, about 210 minutes, internet-based only. But HSK 1–6 as sold and sat today is still the legacy six-level format — the per-level pages describe it and it is what you will sit. A 3.0 syllabus, competency profile and sample papers for levels 1–6 are published, and the awarding body has announced a SECOND round of global trial ("试行") testing, the first sitting having been 31 January 2026. No cutover date for levels 1–6 has been announced. Anyone telling you HSK "has moved to 3.0", or that it "has not been reformed", is wrong in one direction or the other.

HSK 6 sits at the top of the legacy six-level ladder, above it only the newer 7–9 band. It is a long exam, and reading is one of three separately reported scores inside it.

What that means in practice

The exam is 101 items across Listening, Reading and Writing in about 140 minutes, total 300 points. Listening is confirmed at 50 items (15 + 15 + 20) in 50 minutes; the reading item count therefore falls out of the remainder, but it was not read directly from the official page and is not stated here. No pass figure was captured for this level.

Every figure on this page was checked against the awarding body on that date. Exam formats change; check the official page before you book.

How well reading practice fits this exam

A full reading section

Reading is a complete, separately scored section with real passages. Training it moves a number that appears on your result.

LingoRead trains reading. It does not prepare a speaking or writing paper, it does not mark free-text answers, and it does not issue or predict an official result.

What is published, and the arithmetic we refuse to do

The official page gives the whole-exam item count, the approximate duration and the points total, and confirms the listening section’s item count and its own duration. In principle the reading count could be inferred from what is left over — and that is exactly the inference this page does not make. An inferred number is not a published number, and printing it with a source link would misrepresent what the source says.

No pass figure was captured for this level either, so none is stated. Everything that was verified is printed with its source, and the rest says "not published".

Preparing at the top of the ladder

At HSK 6 the texts are long enough that comprehension and stamina stop being separable. Candidates rarely fail because a sentence was impossible; they fail because the sixth paragraph arrived after their attention had already gone. That is trained by reading regularly, not intensively.

LingoRead writes a Chinese passage at your level daily with audio, tap-to-translate and comprehension questions, and rebuilds looked-up words as review cards from their own sentences. As your comprehension holds, the level rises with you.

Honest scope

Reading is one of three reported scores and we train that one. Listening and writing are outside what we do, and the reform position for levels 1–6 is stated on this page rather than resolved by it.
