Is N1 reading much harder than N2?

It is broader rather than simply denser — N1 is the only level using all six published item types, so weaknesses in any one register are exposed.

Do I need N1 to work in Japan?

JLPT N1 reading

The largest language exam in this catalogue. At N1–N3 reading is its own 0–60 section with its own pass mark — you cannot carry a weak reading score on a strong total.

What that means in practice

Reading is never timed separately: it shares a 110-minute booklet with Language Knowledge (Grammar), and there is no official per-item time allocation. Reading is its own scoring section worth 0–60 — exactly one third of the 0–180 total — with a sectional pass mark of 19/60 that you must clear on top of the overall pass mark. One section below its minimum is a fail no matter how high the total. JLPT publishes item types but not question counts — the counts circulating online are not official. Scoring uses scaled scores, not raw correct-answer counts. N1 is the only level using all six reading item types. Overall pass mark 100/180.

Breadth, not just density

A candidate who has spent a year on academic-style Japanese can still lose marks on information retrieval, because scanning a schedule for one condition is a different act from following an argument. The reverse is also true. N1 rewards a reader who is comfortable across registers, which is a slower thing to build than vocabulary and cannot be crammed.

The scoring structure is unchanged from the lower levels: reading is its own scored section worth one third of the total, with a sectional minimum you must clear on top of the overall pass mark, and it shares an untimed-within-itself booklet with Language Knowledge (Grammar). At N1 that booklet is the longest of the ladder.

Preparing across registers

The useful daily habit at N1 is deliberate rotation: an opinion piece one day, a practical notice the next, something narrative after that — each read once, at pace, then checked with questions. Rotation is what closes the gap the six item types open.
