CIPLE (A2) reading

European Portuguese, A1 to C2, for foreign citizens only. CIPLE (A2) is the route to Portuguese nationality; DIPLE (B2) and above open Portuguese-medium universities.

Official exam page

CIPLE is the A2 level of the CAPLE suite and the one used for Portuguese nationality. Before anything else you should know two things about it: there is no standalone reading paper, and CAPLE publishes less about the paper than most awarding bodies do.

What that means in practice

There is no standalone reading paper at A2 either: reading and written production share one 75-minute sitting. This is the level used for Portuguese nationality — and note that Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026, in force from 19 May 2026, amended the Nationality Law to require proof of Portuguese culture, history and national symbols alongside the language. The exact amended wording could not be read from the statute during research; check diariodarepublica.pt before relying on it. CAPLE's own exam pages return HTTP 403 to automated retrieval and are the only authoritative source for text counts, item counts and item types, so none are stated here. Component durations come from the Camões I.P. schedule.

Every figure on this page was checked against the awarding body on that date. Exam formats change; check the official page before you book.

How well reading practice fits this exam

Reading is only part of it

This exam has reading in it, but not as a clean, separately scored passage-comprehension section. We can help with the reading ability it assumes. We cannot prepare you for the exam as a whole, and we will not say otherwise.

LingoRead trains reading. It does not prepare a speaking or writing paper, it does not mark free-text answers, and it does not issue or predict an official result.

Reading is not a paper here

At A2 reading comprehension and written production share a single sitting. There is no separate reading score to train toward and no reading-only clock to pace against. That does not make reading unimportant — you cannot write about a text you did not understand — but it does mean any claim that a tool "prepares you for the CIPLE reading paper" is describing a paper that does not exist.

CAPLE’s own exam pages return HTTP 403 to automated retrieval, which is why this page states no text count, item count or item types: they were never verified against the awarding body. The component durations printed here come from the Camões I.P. schedule, with the source shown. Everything else says "not published", which in this case means "not published to us".

A legal change you must verify yourself

CIPLE is the level used for Portuguese nationality, and Portuguese nationality law was amended with effect from 2026 to require proof of Portuguese culture, history and national symbols alongside the language. The exact amended wording could not be read from the statute during research, so this page does not paraphrase it. Check diariodarepublica.pt, or ask the competent authority, before planning around it.

This matters more than a format detail. A language certificate that satisfied the requirement last year may not satisfy it now, and no preparation product — ours included — can tell you whether yours does.

What daily reading is genuinely worth here

At A2 the useful work is volume of ordinary European Portuguese at a level you can actually hold — notices, short articles, practical texts — read every day rather than in occasional long sessions. LingoRead writes that passage for you, reads it aloud, translates any word you tap and asks comprehension questions on it. That builds the understanding the sitting depends on. It does not prepare the written production half, and it is not exam simulation.
