Official exam page

ТРКИ-I is the threshold level of the Russian state certification system, and the one named for admission to Russian universities. Its reading paper is short, focused and entirely single-choice: three authentic texts, fifty minutes, and no room to be slow.

What that means in practice

Three authentic texts of up to about 250 words each — drawn from newspapers, magazines and books, informational/factographic and narrative-descriptive with elements of reasoning — 20 single-choice items, 50 minutes. Per-text lengths are published as an upper bound per text, not as a paper total, so no total word count is stated. B1 is the official threshold for admission to Russian universities. In-person testing at SPbU runs over two days; the online format runs in one.

Every figure on this page was checked against the awarding body on that date. Exam formats change; check the official page before you book.

How well reading practice fits this exam

A full reading section

Reading is a complete, separately scored section with real passages. Training it moves a number that appears on your result.

LingoRead trains reading. It does not prepare a speaking or writing paper, it does not mark free-text answers, and it does not issue or predict an official result.

Authentic texts, published as an upper bound

The texts are drawn from newspapers, magazines and books — informational and factographic, or narrative and descriptive with elements of reasoning. Their length is published as a bound per text rather than as a paper total, which is why this page states no total word count. Reading real published Russian, rather than graded classroom prose, is therefore not optional preparation: it is the exam.

Because every item is single-choice, the paper does not ask you to produce anything — but it does ask you to distinguish between options that are all plausible if you only half-understood the paragraph. That is a comprehension test disguised as a recognition test, and the way to pass it is to actually understand rather than to recognise familiar words.

Building Russian reading speed

For most learners the bottleneck at this level is case morphology slowing down parsing: you understand the words but need a second pass to work out who did what to whom. That is precisely the thing daily reading fixes and grammar tables do not, because it is a fluency problem rather than a knowledge problem.

LingoRead writes a Russian passage at your level every day, reads it aloud, translates any word you tap and asks comprehension questions on it. Looked-up words return as review cards built from the sentence they appeared in, which is where a case ending finally makes sense.

Honest scope

ТРКИ certification covers five components and reading is one. LingoRead trains that one. Testing arrangements also differ between institutions and formats — in-person sittings at some centres run over two days while the online format runs in one — so confirm the practicalities with the centre you register at.
