TCF reading

A test, not a diploma: it places you on the CEFR scale rather than passing or failing you, and the attestation expires after two years.

Official exam page

TCF is a test, not a diploma. It does not pass or fail you: it places you on the CEFR scale, and the attestation expires. Its reading paper is entirely multiple choice, four options with one correct answer, which changes what preparation is worth doing.

What that means in practice

All items are multiple choice with four options and one correct answer. On computer the reading paper presents 34 items, of which 29 are scored — the 5 extra are trial items FEI uses for item-validity analysis and they do not count toward your score.

Every figure on this page was checked against the awarding body on that date. Exam formats change; check the official page before you book.

How well reading practice fits this exam

A full reading section

Reading is a complete, separately scored section with real passages. Training it moves a number that appears on your result.

LingoRead trains reading. It does not prepare a speaking or writing paper, it does not mark free-text answers, and it does not issue or predict an official result.

All multiple choice, and some of it does not count

On the computer-delivered paper you will see more reading items than are scored: the extras are trial questions FEI uses to validate future items, and they do not affect your result. You are not told which ones they are, so the only sane strategy is to treat every item as real and to keep your pace steady rather than agonising over an item that felt unusually strange.

Because the paper spans the whole CEFR range, you will meet items below and above your level in the same sitting. There is no target band to study to. What raises a TCF reading score is the same thing that raises your reading generally: more comprehension, faster, across more registers.

Preparing for a scaled test

The mistake is buying a "TCF B2" book and drilling one band. The productive alternative is reading French every day at the edge of what you can hold, letting the difficulty rise as your comprehension holds, and answering questions each time so the rise is earned rather than assumed.

That is exactly the loop LingoRead runs: a fresh French passage daily at your current level, audio, tap-to-translate, comprehension questions, and looked-up words saved as review cards from their own sentences.

Honest scope

TCF comes in several versions for different purposes — general, Canadian immigration, Québec, French nationality, residency — and the version you need is decided by the authority asking, not by us. LingoRead trains reading comprehension in French and nothing else about the procedure.
